What Matters When Mastering Techno
The low end is often one of the most important areas to get right when mastering techno. The relationship between the kick and bass needs enough weight and impact without allowing excessive low-frequency energy to obscure other elements of the mix. Depending on the track, mastering may involve controlling particular frequencies, improving definition or simply preserving a low end that is already working well.
Dynamics and transient behaviour are equally important. Techno can rely on relatively small changes in texture, rhythm and intensity to create movement over time, and excessive compression or limiting can reduce that sense of progression. At the same time, the track may need sufficient density and level to work alongside other releases, so loudness has to be balanced against punch and movement.
The upper frequencies also need careful judgement. Hi-hats, rides, noise, distortion and resonant synth sounds can provide much of a track’s energy and character, but can become harsh or tiring if pushed too far. Tonal balance, stereo image and overall level therefore need to be considered together rather than treated independently.
Most importantly, techno covers a wide range of sounds and production styles. A sparse, minimal track may require very different decisions from a dense industrial production or a deep, atmospheric track. We master the individual mix according to what it needs, while preserving the character and intent of the production.
